Quando nos referimos a algo ou alguém que está perto, usamos this (este, esta, isto) e these (estes, estas)
This book is interesting.
This is difficult.
These books are interesting
These are expensive.
Quando nos referimos a algo ou alguém que está longe, usamos that (aquele, aquela, aquilo) e those (aqueles, aquelas).
That girl over there is my sister.
That is Marcela over there.
Those girls over there are my sisters.
These are my sisters over there
O this também pode ser utilizado como advérbio this big/ tall: He's this tall. (Ele é alto assim.) Give me this much. (Me dê um tanto assim.)
Não esqueça: O plural de that é those.
Podemos ainda usar demonstrativos para:
Apresentar uma pessoa:
"Henrique, this is my sister, Martha."
"These are my brothers, Paul and Steve."
Falar ao telefone.
"This is Márcia. Can I speak to Leo?"
"Is that you,Pedro?"
Para fazer um comentário sobre algo dito por outra pessoa.
Person A: O passed my test!
Person B: That's great!!
Também podemos utilizar o that em expressões:
* Quer dizer: "We can go on friday. If you are free, that is" (Podemos ir na sexta. Quer dizer, se você estiver livre.)
* Acabou-se!: "You are not going and that's that! (Você não vai e acabou-se!)
* Como advérbio:
That big: The fish I caught was that big. (O peixe que peguei era grande assim.)
That good: The food wasn't all that good. (A comida não estava tão boa assim.)
* Conjunção (que):
- Para introduzir conjunções subordinadas: She said (that) She was tired. (Ela disse que estava cansada)
- Como pronome relativo (que): Did you get the books (that) I sent? (Você recebeu os livros que eu mandei?)
PS: Nos casos em que o that está entre parênteses é porque ele não é obrigatório, podendo ser omitido.
- Expressando consequência (so... that/ such... that): He's so annoying that no one will work with him. (Ele é tão irritante, que ninguém quer trabalhar com ele.)
-Superlativo (que): The greatest player that ever lived. (O melhor jogador que já existiu.)
